Dr. Hans Mathias Kepplinger

Hans Mathias Kepplinger, Professor Emeritus, received his Ph.D. in political science in 1970 and his postdoctoral lecturing qualifications in 1977. He was a German Science Foundation Heisenberg scholarship holder (1978-1982) and Professor of Mass Communications (1982-2011). He served intermittently as director of the Institut fuer Publizistik at University of Mainz until 2008. His keen interest in international issues has taken him to UC Berkeley, University of Munich, University of Tunis, Southern Illinois University, University of Zurich, University of Lugano, University of Luzern and Harvard University as a visiting scholar. Kepplinger has authored, co-authored or edited more than 30 books and 300 scientific articles, 66 of which have been published in English. Major topics include the effects of media coverage on the development of crisis; scandals and elections; the reciprocal effects on politicians, managers, and lawyers who have become protagonists of media coverage; and the influence of journalists' attitudes and role perceptions on the selection and presentation of news.
